Butchers in Luuka Town Council on Tuesday August 11, 2026 protested against alleged mistreatment and overcharging by their veterinary officer, Dr Batyame.
The butchers raised their grievances during a meeting with Luuka District Chief Administrative Officer Ronald Mutegete. They accused Batyame of being harsh and making decisions without consulting them.
“We condemn Dr Batyame over his harsh treatment towards us. He doesn’t listen to anyone but just takes his own decisions,” the butchers told the CAO.
They also accused the veterinary officer of imposing excessive charges on them, allegations that prompted the district leadership to intervene.
However, Batyame rejected some of the accusations, saying the disagreements arose partly from his efforts to compel butchers to clear debts owed to livestock farmers.
“I have struggled with many of you to pay the farmers their money after getting their animals on loan,” Batyame said.
He argued that some butchers had become unhappy with him after he intervened to ensure farmers received payment for animals supplied on credit.
Following the meeting, Mutegete replaced Batyame with Luuka District Veterinary Officer Dr Stephen Misiri to take charge of veterinary duties in Luuka Town Council.
The CAO also cautioned the butchers to maintain proper hygiene and sanitation at their workplaces to prevent meat contamination and sanitation-related diseases.
He urged the parties to cooperate with the new arrangement and ensure veterinary services are conducted professionally.
