Police in Nakaseke District arrested 22 people on Monday, August 17, 2026, after allegedly finding them with suspected wildlife products and hunting equipment.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima said the suspects were intercepted at about 11:00 p.m. at a snap checkpoint while travelling in a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K.
Police said a search of the vehicle recovered hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, roots and leaves of unidentified species, as well as smoked and fresh meat suspected to be from wild animals.
Three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills were also recovered and secured as exhibits.
All the 22 occupants of the taxi were arrested and detained as investigations into the alleged unlawful possession of wildlife species and products continue.
Twiineamazima said the suspects will be handed over to the Uganda Wildlife Authority for further management.
