A 33-year-old man has been killed by a mob after he was found with two chickens suspected to have been stolen.

The incident occurred Thursday, August 20, 2026 in Bugiri District. Police has identified the victim as Awali Muyingo, a resident of Butegwa A Village in Nankoma Subcounty.

Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said Muyingo was allegedly attacked by residents at about 8:00am after he was found with the two chickens.

Police has registered a case of murder by mob action at Bugiri Central Police Station under CRB 575/2026.

Kasadha said Scene of Crime and homicide officers visited the scene, recovered exhibits and recorded statements to aid investigations.

The body was later conveyed to Bugiri Mortuary for postmortem examination.

Police said the suspects behind the mob killing are yet to be identified and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend them.

Kasadha condemned mob justice, warning members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.

He urged residents to report suspected criminals to police and allow the courts of law to determine their guilt or innocence

“Justice is served in courts, not through violence,” Kasadha said.
