Kisoro District Speaker Amos Hakizimana and another district councillor have been arrested over allegations of soliciting bribes from job seekers.
The two were arrested Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Kisoro District in a joint operation by police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
Hakizimana, 45, is the LC5 councillor for Mulora Sub-county and Speaker of Kisoro District Council. He is a resident of Kamonyi Cell, Kamonyi Ward in Kisoro Municipality.
The second suspect, John Mfitumukiza, 35, is the LC5 councillor representing Nyarusiza Sub-county and a resident of Zindiro Cell, Kamonyi Ward in Kisoro Municipality.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the two allegedly abused their offices by soliciting bribes from people seeking jobs in Kisoro District in 2025.
Police did not immediately disclose how much money the councillors allegedly demanded or the specific jobs involved.
The suspects are being detained at Kisoro Central Police Station as investigations into the allegations continue.
Police said the operation forms part of efforts to fight corruption in public offices and urged public officials to uphold accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
Members of the public with information related to the case have been encouraged to report to police, the Inspectorate of Government or the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
