Livestock owners in Bugweri District may breathe a sigh of relief following the arrest of a suspected cattle thief and recovery of two stolen cows.
On August 30, 2026, at about 10:57pm, police arrested 25-year-old Fahad Balaza Magumba during an intelligence-led operation in Bukokola Bubenge B Village, Igombe Sub-county, Bugweri District.
The arrest comes amid persistent cases of cattle and other livestock theft across parts of Busoga and neighbouring Buganda, where farmers have repeatedly lost animals to thieves.
For communities where cattle, goats and other livestock constitute an important source of household income and livelihood, such thefts can leave families counting heavy economic losses.
The arrest and recovery of the two cows therefore offers some relief to livestock owners in Bugweri and surrounding areas, while sending a warning to those involved in the vice.
The operation was conducted by officers from Nambale Police Station in coordination with Bugweri District Police following intelligence that suspected stolen cattle were being offered for sale at Nambale Trading Centre.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said two cows were recovered during the operation.
Mr. Magumba, a resident of Nabitovu Village, Mwira Parish, Nambale Sub-county in Iganga District, is accused of stealing the animals from his relatives in Bukokola Bubenge B Village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the recovered cows belong to Ms. Tebenenia Namuyindi and Mr. Kigali Banuli, both residents of the same village.
Police said the suspect is related to the victims through his maternal family.
Mr. Magumba is currently detained at Iganga Central Police Station on allegations of cattle theft as investigations continue.
ASP Kasadha said the recovered cows have been exhibited as police work to establish whether more animals were stolen and whether other people were involved.
Police commended residents for providing timely information that led to the arrest and pledged to intensify operations against cattle theft across the Busoga East policing region.
