Ann Ruyondo Lumumba has defeated incumbent Farida Kibowa to become the NRM flag bearer for National Women’s Council chairperson.
In the party elections held on September 2, 2026, at the Secretariat, Ruyondo secured 109 votes against Kibowa’s 25, handing the incumbent a decisive defeat.
NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, who presided over the exercise, commended voters for maintaining discipline.
“I am happy that we have at last chosen leaders of your choice who will represent the NRM in the Friday national elections,” Dr. Odoi said.
He pledged the party’s full support for its flag bearers to defeat opposition and independent candidates.
“The NRM party will, with its full force, back our ticket holders at the national level to ensure we defeat the opposition candidates and the independents,” he said.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission roadmap, national-level activities are scheduled for September 3 and 4, 2026, with the National Women’s Committee election set for Friday, September 4.
Ruyondo will, therefore, proceed for nomination before facing opposition and independent candidates in the final election.
With the backing of the ruling party and her overwhelming victory in the NRM primaries, Ruyondo appears destined for a smooth win in Friday’s national contest.
