Police in Kamuli District have arrested a woman following the recovery of suspected government drugs and medical equipment allegedly diverted from the public health system.
On September 2, 2026, police searched identified premises in Kamuli Municipality after receiving intelligence about the alleged unlawful possession and sale of government medical supplies.
Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega said officers recovered assorted medicines and medical equipment labelled “Government of Uganda—Not for Sale.”
Police also recovered a government refrigerator from a motor vehicle suspected to have been used in the illicit operation. The vehicle was impounded as an exhibit.
Ms. Lydia Nangobi was arrested and remains in police custody to assist with investigations. Police are pursuing another suspect who remains at large.
Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the recovered medicines had expired, raising concerns about the danger they posed to unsuspecting members of the public.
Police are working with the National Medical Stores, National Drug Authority and other health agencies to verify the items and establish how they left the official government supply chain.
The recovered exhibits are being documented, sorted and secured as investigations continue.
Police cautioned the public against possessing or trading in government medical supplies and urged anyone with information about the diversion of drugs to report to the nearest police station.
The recovery comes amid persistent concern over the diversion of medicines meant for public health facilities, a practice that undermines healthcare delivery and deprives patients of essential treatment.
