Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a Born-again pastor for allegedly assaulting and injuring a church secretary during a disagreement over church collections.
On August 30, 2026, at about 2:00pm, Pastor Felix Ayebare of Kyarusongyera Anointed Church allegedly attacked Ms. Joan Byomuhangi, 34, at the church in Bwanga Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said the disagreement reportedly started when Pastor Ayebare grabbed a basket containing church collections before the money was counted.
During the confrontation, the pastor allegedly hit Ms. Byomuhangi, who serves as the church secretary, leaving her with injuries.
Pastor Ayebare is also accused of grabbing her mobile phone and throwing it down, causing damage to its front and back.
Police said the pastor had earlier threatened Ms. Byomuhangi, accusing her of preventing him from enjoying church money.
He was subsequently arrested as police opened investigations into the assault and damage to property allegations.
SP Tumushime cautioned religious leaders to operate within the law, stressing that freedom of worship does not permit assault, fraud or extortion.
He warned that any religious leader suspected of engaging in criminal activities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with Ugandan law.
The allegations against Pastor Ayebare have not yet been proved in court, and he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
