Three medical staff from Apex Medical and Diagnostic Center in Bukedea District have been arrested following the tragic death of an expectant mother who had been referred to Atutur Hospital but was treated at their facility instead.
The arrested individuals include Patricia Alupo, Cuthbert Okwi, and Sarah Angodia, who were taken into custody over the weekend after the death of Beatrice, a resident who had earlier failed to deliver at Bukedea Health Center IV.
The incident sparked outrage among locals of Ogil Parish in Kamaca Sub-County, Kumi District, who stormed the clinic, demanding answers regarding the circumstances that led to the death of their neighbor.
According to local sources, Beatrice was referred to Atutur Hospital after complications at Bukedea Health Center IV. However, she was instead diverted to Apex Medical and Diagnostic Center, where she eventually passed away.
In response to the incident, Kamaca Sub-County LC3 Chairperson Moses Justine Asire urged residents to prioritize using government health facilities over private clinics to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
Richard Asiimwe, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Bukedea, confirmed the arrests on September 8, 2024, and issued a stern warning to medical practitioners, stressing the need to adhere to professional standards and protocols in their work to ensure patient safety.
Investigations are ongoing as the community seeks justice for the deceased.
