KAMPALA – The Government of Uganda has begun evacuating Ugandan nationals stranded in South Africa following growing security concerns that have left hundreds fearing for their lives.
The evacuation follows reports of anti-foreigner tensions in parts of South Africa, prompting many Ugandans to seek assistance from the government. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more than 740 Ugandans registered for evacuation after expressing fears over their safety.
Government says the multi-agency operation is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda’s High Commission in Pretoria and leaders of the Ugandan community in South Africa.
Officials are facilitating emergency travel documents for citizens who lost their passports while others are being transported to designated assembly points before being flown back home.
The evacuation exercise comes after one Ugandan was reportedly killed during the unrest, while many others abandoned their businesses and homes in search of safety.
The government has urged Ugandans still in South Africa to remain in contact with the Uganda High Commission for guidance as the evacuation continues.
Eye Media Uganda will keep following the rescue operation and provide updates as more Ugandans return home.
