Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore Ariko, and his co-accused have returned to the Anti-Corruption Court for the hearing of a high-profile corruption case involving the alleged loss of more than Shs 37 billion in public funds.
The accused were last week remanded to Luzira Prison after being formally charged with multiple offences, including embezzlement, money laundering, causing financial loss, abuse of office and conspiracy to defraud.
The prosecution alleges that the accused participated in the irregular diversion and mismanagement of billions of shillings belonging to Parliament. The charges stem from investigations conducted by anti-corruption agencies into the alleged misuse of public resources.
The officials have since denied the charges, and the court remanded them pending further hearings.
The case has attracted significant public attention as it comes amid an intensified government crackdown on corruption in public institutions.
Anti-Corruption Drive Intensifies
The prosecution of Obore and his co-accused forms part of wider investigations into alleged financial misconduct within Parliament.
The developments have also coincided with the anticipated arraignment of former Speaker Anita Among, who is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court today over separate corruption-related investigations.
The two cases have heightened public scrutiny over accountability in Parliament, with many Ugandans closely following the proceedings.
Today’s court session is expected to address matters including the progress of investigations, possible bail applications and the scheduling of further hearings.
Security has been heightened around the Anti-Corruption Court as lawyers, relatives and members of the public gather to follow the proceedings.
Eye Media will continue to provide updates as the case unfolds.
