Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court today in what is shaping up to be one of Uganda’s most closely watched corruption cases in recent years.
Among, who has reportedly remained under tight security restrictions at her residence since May as investigators concluded their inquiries, is expected to be formally presented before court. Earlier reports suggested she’d be arraigned yesterday but her close ally separately intimated to us that she would actually face court today, Tuesday July 7 , 2026. Depending on the court’s decision, she could either be remanded to Luzira Prison or released on bail pending further proceedings.
Her anticipated arraignment follows months of investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of office and illicit enrichment.
How the Investigations Began
The investigations gathered momentum after President Yoweri Museveni publicly directed anti-corruption agencies to thoroughly investigate allegations of corruption involving officials in Parliament. The President repeatedly emphasized that no public official should be shielded from accountability and called for comprehensive investigations into the alleged misuse of public resources.
Following the directive, investigators from the Inspectorate of Government (IG), the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and other agencies reportedly conducted searches at properties linked to the former Speaker, recovering documents, electronic devices and several motor vehicles believed to be relevant to the investigations.
Among has consistently denied wrongdoing and has maintained that her wealth was acquired through legitimate business ventures and lawful sources.
Previous UK Sanctions
The former Speaker has previously faced international scrutiny. In 2024, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Among over allegations of involvement in serious corruption. The sanctions included travel restrictions and asset freezes under the UK’s Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions regime.
Among rejected the allegations at the time, insisting she had committed no offence and describing the sanctions as unjustified.
Luxury Lifestyle Under Public Spotlight
Among’s wealth has frequently attracted public attention, particularly following reports of her acquisition and use of high-end luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, which became a subject of public debate amid growing concerns over accountability and public expenditure.
Although ownership of luxury property or vehicles is not in itself evidence of criminal conduct, investigators are examining aspects of the former Speaker’s assets as part of their broader inquiry.
Parliament Officials Already Facing Charges
The expected court appearance also comes after several senior parliamentary officials were remanded on charges including corruption, abuse of office and money laundering.
Among those facing prosecution is Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, together with other officials accused of participating in alleged schemes involving the mismanagement of public funds. The accused have denied the charges, and their cases remain before the courts.
The prosecution of senior parliamentary officials has intensified scrutiny of Parliament’s financial management and is widely viewed as part of a broader anti-corruption drive.
As the Anti-Corruption Court convenes today, many Ugandans will be watching closely to see not only the outcome of Among’s appearance but also whether investigators widen the net to include additional suspects as the investigations continue.
Eye Media will provide live updates from the Anti-Corruption Court as proceedings unfold.
