With President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni set to address the nation on Saturday, July 4, at 8:00 p.m., attention has shifted to what many Ugandans hope will be addressed during the highly anticipated national broadcast.
The Presidential Press Unit (PPU) on Wednesday announced that the President would speak on “matters of national importance” but did not disclose the specific agenda. The announcement has since sparked nationwide discussion, with citizens, political observers, civil society groups and social media users sharing their expectations ahead of the address.
Media Closure Tops Public Expectations
Among the issues attracting the greatest public attention is the continued closure of NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor, whose operations were suspended following directives issued by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Many Ugandans are hoping President Museveni will clarify the government’s position on the matter and provide guidance on whether the two media houses will be allowed to resume operations.
The expectations have grown even stronger following a recent meeting between Gen. Muhoozi and senior executives from Nation Media Group, a development that many interpreted as a positive step towards resolving the standoff.
Economy and Cost of Living
Another issue many citizens hope the President will address is the state of the economy.
With concerns over the rising cost of living, unemployment and household incomes continuing to dominate public conversations, many Ugandans expect the President to outline measures aimed at improving livelihoods, creating jobs and sustaining economic growth during his new term in office.
Security and National Stability
Security remains another major area of public interest.
Ugandans are also looking forward to hearing the President’s assessment of the country’s security situation, regional peace efforts and the government’s plans to maintain stability amid evolving domestic and regional challenges.
Service Delivery and Corruption
Many observers also expect Museveni to speak about public service delivery and the fight against corruption.
The President has repeatedly criticised inefficiency, misuse of public resources and delays in implementing government programmes. Saturday’s address could therefore include fresh directives to government institutions and public officials aimed at improving accountability and service delivery.
Digital Communication
The President’s growing use of social media has also generated considerable public interest.
His recent online video messages have attracted both praise and criticism, making digital communication another issue some Ugandans believe could feature in his remarks, particularly regarding citizen engagement and responsible use of online platforms.
Nation Awaits Official Message
Despite the growing public expectations, State House has not confirmed the subjects that will be covered during the address.
As a result, the exact content of the President’s message remains known only to the Presidency until he speaks on Saturday evening.
Millions of Ugandans are expected to tune in at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday through television, radio and online platforms to hear the President’s address, which could shape national discussions in the days that follow.
