PARLIAMENT – Woman Members of Parliament have raised alarm over what they describe as a disturbing trend of domestic violence, with some legislators allegedly being assaulted by their husbands over the money they are perceived to receive from Parliament.

The concerns were raised by Terego District Woman MP Hon. Rose Obiga, who told Parliament that several of her colleagues have reportedly become victims of physical abuse after their spouses demanded large sums of money, believing MPs earn billions of shillings.

“We have already started hearing that our colleagues (Woman MPs) are being beaten for money. Is it money that men really want, or is it love?” Obiga said.

She said some husbands are demanding what she described as “abnormal billions,” under the misconception that Woman MPs receive enormous amounts of money simply because they serve in Parliament.

“Yes, they are being beaten by husbands. Men are asking for abnormal billions as if we are here making billions. And this must stop,” she said.

Obiga vowed that Woman MPs would work together to confront the vice, insisting that no woman should be subjected to violence over money or any other reason.

She further declared that, as the Vice Chairperson of the West Nile Parliamentary Caucus and the Woman MP for Terego District, she would not tolerate men who assault their wives in the region.

Appealing directly to men, Obiga urged husbands to love, respect and support their wives rather than viewing them as sources of income.

“I want to say this: in West Nile, where I am the Vice Chair of the regional parliamentary caucus and as a Woman MP, I won’t tolerate any man beating my women,” she said.

Her remarks add a new dimension to the national conversation on gender-based violence, highlighting that domestic abuse can affect women regardless of their social or political status.
