Residents of Bunio Village in Namalemba Sub-county, Bugweri District, have raised concerns over alleged mismanagement of public resources by local leaders, following claims involving the use and disposal of government assets.
The concerns were voiced during a village meeting held on Monday, where residents reportedly questioned the handling of public land and forestry resources under the leadership of Namalemba LCIII Chairman, Menya Dan of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
According to residents, the LCIII chairman allegedly leased out government land in Namalemba Parish to a sugarcane farmer at a reported value of Shs 750,000, a move some community members claim was done without broad local consultation.
In a separate allegation raised during the same meeting, residents also accused the chairman of selling trees located at the sub-county headquarters for approximately Shs 450,000, raising further concerns about transparency in the management of public assets.
The village meeting in Bunio reportedly attracted local leaders and a district-level official who was accused by some attendees of attempting to shield the LCIII chairman, described by critics as a close political ally.
The discussions at the meeting were at times tense, with residents demanding accountability and clarity on how public resources are being managed at sub-county level.
However, the accused LCIII chairman and the district leader in question have not publicly responded to the allegations, and Eye Media has not independently verified the claims.
Efforts to reach the district authorities for comment were ongoing by press time.
The allegations come amid growing public scrutiny of local government leaders over land management and accountability in Bugweri District.
Eye Media will continue to follow the matter and provide updates as more information becomes available.
