A close ally of former Speaker Anita Among has clarified that her anticipated appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and not Monday as had been widely reported by several media outlets.
Responding to the reports, the ally told Eye Media: “It’s supposed to be tomorrow. Not today.”
The clarification came after a day of speculation that Among would be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on Monday to answer corruption-related charges. However, no court appearance took place, and by 7:10 p.m., the former Speaker was still at her residence.
According to the ally, the expected court session has always been slated for Tuesday.
How Anita Among Landed in Trouble
Among’s legal troubles stem from an ongoing anti-corruption investigation targeting the alleged misuse of public resources and suspected illicit enrichment during her tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
The investigations intensified following growing public concern over accountability in Parliament, with anti-corruption agencies widening their inquiries to include senior current and former parliamentary officials.
In recent weeks, investigators attached to the Inspectorate of Government (IG) and other law enforcement agencies conducted searches at properties associated with Among in Kampala and Bukedea. During the operations, investigators reportedly recovered documents, electronic gadgets and impounded several motor vehicles believed to be relevant to the investigations.
Authorities have indicated that the searches formed part of efforts to gather evidence in the ongoing probe. The exact charges expected to be preferred against the former Speaker have not yet been officially disclosed.
Among has consistently maintained her innocence and has previously dismissed allegations of wrongdoing, insisting that she acquired her wealth through legitimate means and that she is prepared to cooperate with lawful investigations.
High-Profile Investigation
The investigations into Among come amid a broader government crackdown on corruption involving senior public officials. In recent months, several officials attached to Parliament have been arrested and questioned over separate allegations relating to the management of public funds, a development that has placed the institution under intense public scrutiny.
The anticipated court appearance by the former Speaker is expected to attract significant public interest, given her prominence in national politics and the implications the case could have for the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
By Monday evening, neither the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions nor the Judiciary had issued an official statement confirming Tuesday’s proceedings.
Eye Media will continue following the matter and provide live updates from the Anti-Corruption Court once proceedings commence on Tuesday.
