Leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League in the Lango Sub-region have unveiled plans to establish a cooperative bank aimed at strengthening women-led savings and credit groups and improving household incomes across the region.
The announcement was made during a fundraising drive held on Sunday in Kwania District, where leaders mobilized resources to support women-led saving cooperative societies.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairperson of the Association of Lango NRM Party Women’s League, Zena Opolot Opio, said the initiative is intended to empower women economically by enabling them to access affordable financial services and actively participate in income-generating activities.
“Our association has already supported more than five members from Lira City, Lira District, Apac and Kwania through various initiatives, and we are ready to extend this support to the entire Lango Sub-region,” Opio said.
She encouraged women to take advantage of government wealth creation programmes to improve their livelihoods and reduce dependence on their spouses.
“We have government programmes targeting women directly, while others such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and the restocking programme are open to everyone. Let us embrace these opportunities, engage in business and become financially independent,” she urged.
Leaders of the NRM in Kwania District welcomed the proposal and pledged their support towards the establishment of the cooperative bank.
Representing the Kwania District NRM Chairperson, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Opio Okello, called for unity among members of the Women’s League, saying collective efforts would accelerate socio-economic transformation.
“We shall continue working closely with the Women’s League to ensure they remain united and focused on improving household incomes and community development,” Okello said.
Meanwhile, Susan Abeja, a member of the NRM Women’s League from Chawente Sub-county, appealed to men to support women’s economic empowerment initiatives.
“We still have many women in our villages who entirely depend on their husbands for survival. We want our women to be empowered so that they can earn their own income and actively participate in the money economy,” she said.
The proposed cooperative bank is expected to provide affordable financial services, strengthen women-led savings groups and support entrepreneurship among women across the Lango Sub-region, in line with the government’s agenda of promoting wealth creation and inclusive economic development.
