At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and 28 others injured following a fatal road crash at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at around 9:34 p.m. and involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBE 110H, belonging to OPIT Travellers Company, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number KBS 564D/ZE 7948.
According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road.
In the process, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.
Traffic police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said 14 people died on the spot while 28 others sustained injuries.
The injured victims were rushed to various health facilities for treatment as emergency responders worked through the night to rescue survivors and clear the scene.
Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns over speeding and reckless driving on Uganda’s highways, particularly during the night when visibility is poor.
Police have urged motorists to strictly observe speed limits, especially in trading centres where pedestrian movement is common.
“Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely,” SP Kananura said.
The identities of the deceased had not been released by press time as authorities worked to notify their next of kin.
